LONDON, 31 August
Jason NELMS netted a game-high 24 points for USA as they returned to winning ways with a 77-51 triumph over Italy.
Galliano MARCHIONNI opened the scoring for Italy but the USA dominated the initial exchanges with NELMS netting four points. MARCHIONNI levelled the game at 10-10 but a three-point play from NELMS gave USA a narrow advantage at the end of the first period.
NELMS opened the second quarter with another three-point basket and bagged six more points in the quarter before being subbed with USA leading 22-14.
Italy’s Fabio RAIMONDI grabbed five points to reduce the deficit, and Amine MOUKHARIQ (ITA) levelled the match at 27-27 but USA took a 37-30 lead into half-time as NELMS returned to the court to grab four more points.
Trevon JENIFER (USA) rounded off a sweeping move to put USA 43-32 up early in the third and forward Joshua TUREK contributed 10 points to the quarter as they moved 14 points clear at 57-43.
And the victory was complete thanks to some fine individual work from Nate HINTZE (USA) in the final quarter as he added 12 points, taking his tally to 22 for the match.
It was a disciplined USA performance compared with Italy, who gave away 29 free throws during the game.
