For the past 6 years, LA Lakers’ point guard Steve Nash has held an annual soccer match in New York City to raise funds for his foundation. Nash’s foundation supports education and health programs for under-served youth, and since his arrival in Los Angeles last year, he’s been growing his foundation’s footprint in the city and this event is a natural fit. Los Angeles has a deep, rich history in soccer and strong fan bases exist for both the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, as well as the national teams that represent much of LA’s vast cultural and ethnic base. So it was no surprise the stands were packed, media were out in droves and a long list of sports stars lined up on a beautiful summer evening at the Red Shield Community Center in downtown LA, literally a few blocks west of the Lakers’ home court at Staples Center.
