I’ve been trying to learn why more of my generation isn’t doing more to protect the natural environment and, in turn, ourselves. For as much flack as we get for the phones glued to our hands, we’re doing a lot of incredible things in nature: first ascents of huge mountains, solar energy innovation, increasing diversity in the outdoors, taking conservation and mountain sports mainstream. More of us are working in green technology than ever. We create careers for ourselves and we don’t always follow the standard life path. We are now more capable of sharing our outdoor experiences than ever in history. And we also have traits in common with past generations: we appreciate home-grown produce, we want the next generation to be better-off, and we struggle to find jobs, direction in life, motivation to stay fit, and ways be happy.
I think about this stuff. A lot of us do. And I, personally, really want to stop TALKING about saving the environment and start ACTING. But then I realize that maybe I, personally, am best utilized in this movement by talking the talking and walking the walk. Maybe that IS acting.
Frequently, though, I just feel like that isn’t enough.
