Our next National Double-Goal Coach Award winner feature is the co-coaching team of Mark Smith and Dan Springer of True Grit Lacrosse in Bozeman, Montana. “Mark and Dan help their players win on and off the field,” said Jim Thompson, PCA founder and CEO and author of nine books on youth sports, including The Power of Double-Goal Coaching. “By creating a positive, character-building youth sports experience and serving as a Double-Goal Coach, Mark and Dan help youth develop into better athletes and better people.” Coaching 11-to-13-year-old boys, Smith and Springer focus on “helping each player do his best, so that they can help other players do their best,” Smith said. “It’s not important to be the best, but it’s important to do your best. These are things they can take into the rest of their lives, way beyond lacrosse.” Springer explained another set of life lessons the coaching team teaches through an insignia of a five-pointed star and the five values of Team, Honor, Community, Grit and Joy. “That encompasses everything we’re looking for. It’s a team sport. We honor the history of our sport, which was played long before our current civilization was here. For community, we talk about how the way you carry yourself on the field reflects on friends and family and the whole community. The grit part addresses how you fight through the ups and downs of both sports and life. And we just want them to love what they’re doing so they do it with joy, whether it’s lacrosse or math class.” Congratulations, Coach Smith and Springer!
