AUSTRALIA HONOURS ‘BLACK POWER’ HERO NORMAN WITH OLYMPICS AWARD

Australian Olympic Team awarded a posthumous Order of Merit to Peter Norman for his support to civil rights symbolical action of Smith and Carlos at the 1968 Mexico Olympic. Peter Norman took the second place in the competition after an impressive straight, with a time of 20 seconds and six hundredths, setting a national record in Australia for the 200-metre sprint that still stands after 50 years.

He suggested to Smith and Carlos to share a pair of gloves to make their gesture on the podium to protest against racial segregation in the United States. Norman backed their gesture, wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in support, but was then frozen out of future Games selection.

When Norman died in 2006 of a heart attack, John Carlos and Tommie Smith carried his coffin at his funeral.
