2018 GSMP: Sport for Community—Inclusive Basketball

To kickoff the 2018 GSMP: Sport for Community program, 17 international leaders in disability sport joined athletes from Special Olympics Prince George’s County and students from Elizabeth Seton High School for a day of inclusive basketball in Bladensburg, Maryland. In addition to playing and learning alongside athletes of different abilities, participants learned about grassroots program development, youth recruitment, and adaptive equipment.

As part of the #GSMP, delegates craft strategic plans of action that use sport as a key platform to promote equality and inclusion in their home countries. Although it might seem impossible to change cultural expectations about what persons with disabilities can do, they are starting a new era where people of all abilities can be seen, heard, and included.
